The death of a major advocate of ציונות ẒIYONUT accompanied refugee negotiations, camp pressures and a provisionally dated fatal civilian attack.
What did Wise’s death mean?
The death of ר׳ סטיבן Samuel Wise R. STEPHEN marked the loss of a leader who connected communal organization in the United States to sovereignty in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. Institutional records give April 19, while the principal JTA obituary was published April 20. Tributes and a planned funeral are reportage about the death, not new occurrence dates.12
What did diplomats expect from Lausanne?
Ethridge’s April 19 telegram considered prospects for negotiation while warning that the refugee problem could persist. Creating a mechanism to address return, resettlement and compensation would not itself restore homes. The report documents expectations and policy arguments, not an accepted program or new movement of refugees.3
Which civilian attack may belong here?
The fatal attack south of ים המלח YAM HAʾMELAḤ is provisionally placed on April 19 from the April 21 diary, with April 20 as the newspaper alternative. Six deaths and five injuries are JTA’s reported figures. The two date accounts plausibly concern one incident; they are not separately added. Camp overcrowding and the scheduled pilgrimage remain other developments, without a verified new housing count or confirmed procession.4567
How is this dated?
This daily Event covers the civil-date slot April 19, 1949, Day 507 of 599, using its daytime fixed-Hebrew route כ׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ט 20th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. April 19 is Wise’s institutional death date. The civilian incident may be April 19 or 20; the obituary and attack bulletins are not interchangeable clocks. After-sunset incidents belong to the following Hebrew day; this civil-day recap does not override their occurrence dates. 891011
