Twelve soldiers died in frontier fighting; separate civilian casualties and continued diplomacy require their own dates and responsibility tests.
How did the battle develop?
The battle near الدوايمة AL-DAWAYIMA and Idna followed a military patrol and encounters along a still-contested frontier. Dori’s briefing described firing at an initial group before a larger attack. Later scholarship adds removal of shepherds and seizure of sheep. Both accounts are attributed and tested in the fuller study. Twelve eventual military deaths include the nine initially recovered bodies and three missing soldiers.123
Which deaths belong to a different incident?
The April 20 JTA bulletin reported six civilians killed near סדום SEDOM, with its early-today wording conflicting with the diary’s April 19 assignment. This civilian attack must not be folded into the battle’s twelve deaths, nor counted once on each possible date. The victims’ names, attack clock and official investigation remain needed.45
What did continuing diplomacy establish?
Ethridge’s April 20 assessment discussed عبدالله ABDULLAH’s interest in settlement and the barriers posed by territory, refugees and ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. It does not establish that the kingdom’s government ordered either attack. Diplomatic talks, individual cross-border movement and an organized attack are different evidence questions.6
How is this dated?
This daily Event covers the civil-date slot April 20, 1949, Day 508 of 599, using its daytime fixed-Hebrew route כ״א בניסן ה׳תש״ט 21st 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. The diary explicitly dates the dawn patrol April 20. The civilian early-today bulletin conflicts with the diary’s April 19 assignment; later reporting does not create new deaths. After-sunset incidents belong to the following Hebrew day; this civil-day recap does not override their occurrence dates. 78910
