Teaching resumed at the אוניברסיטה העברית UNIVERSITA HAʾIVRIT while a proposed refugee program and casualty reportage exposed different kinds of institutional action.
What resumed at the university?
Telkes dates the academic-year restart to April 22. Temporary teaching premises sustained learning while הר הצופים HAR HAʾẒOFIM remained inaccessible. JTA’s April 24 reopening ceremony and degree awards are preserved as a separate stage. A ceremony report does not move the beginning of the academic year onto its publication day.12
Which refugee-policy text belongs to this day?
McGhee’s memorandum was submitted April 22, asking for approval. The edition attaches later revised papers, chiefly dated April 27. Relief estimates, a displacement planning assumption and proposed return targets have different purposes; none proves actual population movement on this day. The cover, revised annexes, government acceptance and implementation remain separate acts.3
Why does the casualty bulletin not add fifteen deaths?
The April 22 bulletin reported nine soldiers and six civilians in two earlier incidents. The diary and later military investigation place the soldiers’ battle on April 20 and confirm twelve eventual deaths. The civilian incident remains April 19/20. A secondhand account of a Beirut radio demand for stronger border control does not prove عبدالله ABDULLAH ordered either attack.45
How is this dated?
This daily Event covers the civil-date slot April 22, 1949, Day 510 of 599, using its daytime fixed-Hebrew route כ״ג בניסן ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. April 22 is the scholarly teaching-start date and the memorandum’s cover date. The April 24 ceremony, revised annexes and earlier attacks retain separate dates. After-sunset incidents belong to the following Hebrew day; this civil-day recap does not override their occurrence dates. 6789
Guided reflections
- How did temporary classrooms preserve the university’s role in the life of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL?
- Why do revised annexes limit what can be assigned to McGhee’s submission day?
