Diplomacy in Washington joined UN membership to disputes over the capital, boundaries and Arab refugees.

What occurred at the presidential luncheon?

The April 25 meeting brought חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN together with Harry Truman. Acheson’s account reported financial help for refugees but explicitly left the discussion of repatriation uncertain. The edition corrects an April 23 preparation paper’s anticipated luncheon date. The meeting was therefore April 25, not the date on which the briefing was prepared.1

What did immigrant-transport reportage establish?

The April 25 JTA issue reported about 1,000 יהודים YEHUDIM from the Czechoslovak Republic sailing from Bari on the Galilah over the weekend. The figure is a report about a stage of travel through the Italian Republic, not 1,000 verified arrivals in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL on April 25. Passenger lists, departure time and arrival records are needed before this becomes a day-specific immigration count.2

What remained undecided?

The four issues discussed in Washington remained diplomatic questions. No boundary concession, individual refugee return or grant of UN membership is completed by the luncheon. Maintaining those limits preserves both the pressure confronting national institutions and the scope of their agency in responding.3

How is this dated?

This recap follows the civil-day slot 1949-04-25, Day 513 of the series beginning November 30, 1947. Fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion gives the daytime route כ״ו בניסן ה׳תש״ט 26th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709. Events after sunset may belong to כ״ז בניסן ה׳תש״ט 27th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709; each linked study explains its own occurrence, dispatch, issue and boundary. A report appearing on this day is identified as reportage when its covered event occurred earlier. The official memorandum and correction date the luncheon April 25.45

Guided reflections

  • How does Acheson’s absence from part of the luncheon conversation limit what can be claimed about a repatriation promise?
  • How do the four disputed issues at the luncheon expose responsibilities still unresolved after the armistices?
