Firing near the Old City challenged armistice enforcement while reports described continuing negotiations over the city’s military geography.

What happened near the city wall?

The afternoon engagement involved forces of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and the Arab Legion. JTA reported one seriously and two slightly wounded soldiers and competing first-fire accusations. The commanders ordered firing to stop. The wounded are not counted as fatalities, and unknown Arab casualties remain unknown.1

Which diplomatic discussion preceded the telegram?

Burdett’s April 30 telegram transmits his April 29 conversation with משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN about armistice implementation and the railway corridor. The telegram’s publication includes abridgment, so it cannot be treated as complete meeting minutes. Its transmission is April 30, while the discussion belongs to the preceding day.2

What did the commission announce at Lausanne?

A distinct communiqué appended to the hosted opening notice dates a Jerusalem Committee meeting to the morning of April 30 and plans to hear delegations the following week. That is a dated committee proceeding and a future schedule, not an accepted international regime for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. The hosted page’s April 27 metadata does not override the notice’s own April 30 wording.3

How is this dated?

This recap follows the civil-day slot 1949-04-30, Day 518 of the series beginning November 30, 1947. Fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion gives the daytime route א׳ באייר ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709. Events after sunset may belong to ב׳ באייר ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709; each linked study explains its own occurrence, dispatch, issue and boundary. A report appearing on this day is identified as reportage when its covered event occurred earlier. The May 1 report places firing yesterday afternoon; the committee notice explicitly says April 30.456

Guided reflections

  • What evidence would resolve the opposing first-fire accusations near the Old City wall?
  • How do the contested opening fire and commission notice expose responsibilities still unresolved after the armistices?
