Diplomatic rank and national food allowances were announced as מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL developed the practical responsibilities of independence.

What changed in relations with the former Mandatory power?

A joint announcement raised the missions of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and the English Empire to legations and their representatives to ministers. The diplomatic study retains the express qualification that this did not change de facto recognition to de jure recognition. Future credentials and travel are not completed acts.1

What did the government promise for daily food?

The government specified bread, sugar and meat allowances, twelve eggs monthly and ration books expected within a month. The ration study separates these quantities from actual household distribution. Criticism from agricultural representatives concerned incentives for production. The earlier austerity program was already in place as policy context; the May 15 details were a later announcement.2

Which recognition is assigned through next-day reporting?

JTA’s May 16 issue says the Union of South Africa granted de jure recognition yesterday. That supports a provisional May 15 civil date, without supplying the original instrument or decision hour. A cable received by דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION on May 17 confirmed recognition; receiving that cable did not constitute another first recognition.34

How is this dated?

This is Day 533 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-05-15. Its daytime Ivrit route is ט״ז באייר ה׳תש״ט 16th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709. An individual occurrence after local sunset belongs to י״ז באייר ה׳תש״ט 17th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709; the recap route does not certify each occurrence hour. The joint announcement and ration specification are dated through May 15 JTA today wording; original bulletin datelines and local hours are not collated. Recognition by the Union of South Africa is assigned provisionally from May 16 yesterday wording and distinguished from confirmation received May 17.56

Guided reflections

  • Why does higher diplomatic rank fail to prove a change in recognition?
  • What evidence would turn a ration allowance into a verified household delivery?
