Further ואדי עארה WADI ʿARA villages were transferred and the highway reopened, while a scholarly account separately records coercive departures.

How did the handover continue?

Aql dates entry into five further villages to May 22. The ואדי עארה WADI ʿARA study follows that phase and the establishment of military government without assigning all regional changes to the May 20 entry into אום אל־פחם UMM AL-FAḤM. The original military orders and activity report cited in the scholarship remain uninspected.1

What can be said about civilian departures?

The same study attributes a warning at עארה ʿARA and the crossing of roughly 450 refugees to later testimony. It separately describes residents of מעאויה MUʿAWIYA being moved to אום אל־פחם UMM AL-FAḤM. These are distinct source chains and groups. The reported warning was coercive; it should not be recast as ordinary voluntary travel. The count is not a verified roster, and no universal denial of return is inferred.2

What transport milestone was reported?

JTA said the road between חדרה ḤADERA and עפולה AFULA was open for unrestricted use following Arab Legion withdrawal. The road study keeps that report separate from the later opening ceremony. Its relative reference to Sunday needs original-dateline collation.34

Which settlements and housing were announced?

The dispatch announced two unnamed settlements, one involving Hungarian immigrants and the other former Cyprus detainees, and reported inspection of a three-family housing unit near תל אביב TEL AVIV. It does not identify either settlement as כפר חב״ד KFAR HABAD. The separate founding stub cannot be filled from an unnamed report. The housing example establishes reported construction and inspection, not ownership histories or a nationwide output total.5

How is this dated?

This is Day 540 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-05-22. Its daytime Ivrit route is כ״ג באייר ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709. An individual occurrence after local sunset belongs to כ״ד באייר ה׳תש״ט 24th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709; the recap route does not certify each occurrence hour. The scholarly account explicitly assigns the further entries and reported departures to May 22, but lacks the relevant local clocks and unheld original testimony and orders. The JTA issue says the highway was open today while mentioning Sunday prospectively; that ambiguity remains public. The later ceremony retains May 26 as its own date.67

Guided reflections

  • Why must the two reported displaced groups remain separate in a tally?
  • What would establish the names of the two settlements left unnamed in the dispatch?
