Return by יהודים YEHUDIM continued while diplomats and legislators argued over the new state’s boundaries and powers. The day juxtaposes a reported ship arrival with policy assessments and an uncleared diplomatic draft.
Who arrived at חיפה HAIFA?
JTA’s May 25 issue says approximately 1,700 refugee immigrants arrived yesterday aboard עצמאות AẒMAʾUT. The ship-arrival study therefore uses May 24 as the reported arrival date. The short report contains no manifest, origin list or individual family histories. Reception under sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM did not remove the need for homes and employment.1
How did Washington assess the special committee?
Richard Stabler’s 2 p.m. telegram from Amman sharply criticized the negotiating methods of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL in talks with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He discussed roads, ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and demands associated with the armistice special committee. His allegation of veiled force is an American diplomatic assessment, not an independently recovered military order to attack.2
What was still only a draft?
Dean Rusk sent Ethridge proposed wording for a warning at 6 p.m. The text explicitly had not been considered by the acting secretary or president. Economic pressure was contemplated. The later warning study distinguishes drafting from presidential clearance, dispatch and May 29 delivery.3
Who controlled the record of כנסת KNESSET?
Weitz dates a joint committee meeting to May 24. It considered military censorship of speeches and printed proceedings following the earlier poem decision. The constitutional question concerned the legislature’s control over its own record. The censorship study preserves this distinction; the original joint transcript remains needed.4
How is this dated?
This is Day 542 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-05-24. Its public OTD route is כ״ה באייר ה׳תש״ט 25th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709, the daytime Hebrew conversion of the civil slot. The arrival is inferred from yesterday in the May 25 issue. Stabler and Rusk supply May 24 dispatch dates; Weitz specifically dates the joint committee May 24. An individual occurrence after local sunset belongs to כ״ו באייר ה׳תש״ט 26th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5709; the daily slot does not assign that daytime Hebrew date to every incident described here. Source clocks are local to their named cities; evening reports and meeting times remain distinct. 5678
Guided reflections
- What does the word yesterday add to the עצמאות AẒMAʾUT arrival date?
- Why is Rusk’s uncleared draft different from a presidential instruction?
