The state of יהודים YEHUDIM confronted presidential pressure while renewing a territorial offer linked to refugee reception. Overseas fundraising addressed the resources needed to receive immigrants. These were diplomatic and financial commitments under discussion, not completed population movements.

How did the prime minister respond?

McDonald met דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION and משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT at the prime minister’s home and delivered the American note. The warning study quotes the reported reply and explains its security argument after invasion. משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT promised a considered answer. The ambassador’s 6 p.m. telegram time does not fix the meeting’s clock.1

What did the Gaza letter commit to?

ולטר Eitan WALTER wrote to the Commission explaining the proposed incorporation of the coastal area of עזה AZA and its existing Arab population. The expanded existing proposal study quotes the original English letter, dated May 29 but issued May 30. The letter acknowledged social and economic burdens. It did not establish consent by the Kingdom of Egypt or completion of the transfer.2

What funds were sought for immigrants?

JTA reported a press conference by ישראל גולדשטיין YISRAʾEL GOLDSTEIN, treasurer of הסוכנות היהודית HAʾSOḪNUT HAʾYEHUDIT. He estimated a need for about $200 million in donations and an equal amount in investment for 200,000 immigrants. Agriculture, food production and security connected reception with development in the north, south and the ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM corridor. These are his fundraising estimates, not audited receipts or new arrivals. The article says he arrived in the United States of America yesterday, making his arrival distinct from today’s press conference.3

What remained unresolved for families?

Neither the letter nor the fundraising appeal supplies an implemented return, housing allocation or passenger roster. Refugees in the coastal area of עזה AZA and immigrants entering מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL had different legal and practical circumstances. Their population estimates and financial needs cannot be added as one completed reception tally.45

How is this dated?

This is Day 547 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-05-29. Its public OTD route is א׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709, the daytime Hebrew conversion of the civil slot. The conference is expressly May 29. IS/19’s letter is May 29, its issue May 30. JTA’s press conference is today in the May 29 issue, while Goldstein’s arrival was yesterday. An individual occurrence after local sunset belongs to ב׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709; the daily slot does not assign that daytime Hebrew date to every incident described here. Source clocks are local to their named cities; evening reports and meeting times remain distinct. 678

Guided reflections

  • How did the prime minister’s security argument challenge the proposed territorial settlement?
  • Why must a financial appeal and an offer to receive refugees remain distinct from actual reception?
