On June 3, 1949, American officials considered limits on military training assistance to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. A separate contemporary report alleged the killing of two soldiers near the armistice line and recorded a restriction on agricultural crossings. The report supplies the allegation and civilian consequence, while the actual incident date and victims remain unverified.1
Did the United States establish a training mission?
Defense Secretary Louis Johnson distinguished retired regular officers, inactive reserve officers and an official mission. He considered some individual advisory arrangements legally possible, but opposed government sponsorship and judged an official mission inadvisable while renewed fighting remained possible. These were legal and military policy conclusions addressed to the State Department. They did not create a mission, identify advisers who departed or establish new training delivered to צה״ל ẒAHAL.2
What was reported about the two soldiers?
JTA reproduced a communiqué of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL stating that Arab Legion personnel shot two soldiers while escorting them back toward their own lines near Baqa al-Gharbiyye. It supplied no names or precise incident clock. The same report said harvesting crossings were suspended until an explanation and punishment. This supports a reported restriction; its duration and affected farmers are unknown. It does not establish a later joint investigation’s conclusion or an order by the Legion’s command.3
What else remained unsettled?
The dispatch reported unidentified aircraft over Ayelet HaShahar; identity and purpose remained unknown. Washington separately urged postponement of incorporation of territory administered by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and extension of treaty of the United Kingdom obligations, to protect negotiations. These diplomatic instructions were not annexation. Two reported fatalities remain a provisional incident lead rather than a new verified cumulative total.4
How is this dated?
This is Day 552 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-06-03. Its public daytime route is ו׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 6th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709. The civil slot is not the occurrence date of every item discussed. The Johnson letter and American instruction are dated June 3. JTA securely supplies a June 3 report date but does not independently date the killings; its today expression dates the aircraft report. No incident is moved onto the daily route merely to fill the slot. Unknown clocks preserve ז׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 7th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709 as the adjacent sunset alternative.678
