On the evening of June 6, 1949, forces of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL entered the Government House neutral area in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. The resulting dispute threatened local armistice arrangements and confidence in negotiations elsewhere. Separately, a named vessel brought a large contingent doing עלייה ALIYA to חיפה HAIFA.12
What happened near Government House?
Jordanian authorities alleged entry into the Arab College and Agricultural School, fortified positions, mines and barbed wire. The full incident study compares these accounts with the later UN finding of unauthorized military presence by both sides. That later finding confirms violations without proving identical entries, motives or troop strength. No checked casualty list is supplied. The area’s schools and agricultural land made military arrangements consequential for civilian life.3
Which immigrants arrived aboard the transport?
The June 7 JTA report says 1,800 immigrants arrived yesterday aboard עצמאות AẒMAʾUT from Bari, most from Germany and Austria. This supports June 6 as a reported arrival date. It supplies no passenger manifest, family histories or verified claim of a family’s last survivor of השואה HAʾŜOA. This arrival is distinct from the same vessel’s May 24 arrival, already treated in its own article.5
What can be counted from these records?
A press-reported vessel count may be retained as provisional arrival evidence. It cannot be combined with capacity plans as though places were occupied, or with unrelated refugee-relief figures as one population transfer. Government House entry, civilian admission and receipt of food assistance are different processes. The report does not establish a new cumulative death or displacement figure.6
How is this dated?
This is Day 555 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-06-06. Its public daytime route is ט׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709. The civil slot is not the occurrence date of every item discussed. June 6 is the incident date reported in the June 8 diplomatic account, with only evening supplied. A possible after-sunset route י׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709 remains explicit in the major study. The arrival date is reconstructed from the June 7 issue’s yesterday; its arrival hour remains uncollated.78
Guided reflections
- Why does the later finding against both forces not establish that both entered on June 6?
- What distinguishes a ship’s passenger figure from occupied reception capacity?
