On June 10, 1949, Ethridge left Lausanne without ending the conference. Diplomatic reports described earlier admission discussions and a proposed withdrawal near Government House. Contemporary reporting also documented immigration and a settlement account whose name, founding date and casualty distribution require correction.1
What did Ethridge’s departure change?
A telegram transmitted by John Carter Vincent reported Ethridge’s view that commitments remained unattainable. The editorial note dates his departure to June 10 and names Raymond Hare as temporary successor. The Commission continued. Departure of an American representative was not abandonment of all negotiation or a new armistice.2
Which assurances remained short of implementation?
McDonald’s telegram reported the June 9 Sharett conversation about previous repatriation and proposed family reunion. John Ross separately relayed an assurance from משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN that troops would leave the Government House area and be replaced by military police. The incident study keeps that assurance distinct from the UN-reported June 14 compliance. No applicant’s admission or completed withdrawal follows from the June 10 telegram dates.3
Who arrived aboard the Eilat?
JTA reported 455 immigrants from Tripolitania arriving today aboard אילת EILAT, including about 200 children connected with עליית הנוער ʿALIYAT HAʾNOAR. The named vessel and relative date support a provisional arrival count. The dispatch’s claims about cave-dwelling communities and distant origins are not adopted as established ethnography. Passenger histories and the manifest remain unchecked.5
Why does the settlement report need correction?
JTA called a new settlement Shefer and said sixteen comrades died at النبي يوشع NABI YUSHA. The Hebrew פלמ״ח PALMAḤ heritage records identify the relevant דפנה DAFNA group and date the founding of יראון YIRʾON to May 20 with 74 members. They distribute twelve deaths to النبي يوشع NABI YUSHA and four to other battles, while preserving an internal battle-date inconsistency. The resemblance is strong, but how Shefer entered the report is unknown. Founding, a possible later ceremony and June 10 reportage remain separate; earlier war deaths are not counted again.6
How is this dated?
This is Day 559 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-06-10. Its public daytime route is י״ג בסיון ה׳תש״ט 13th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709. The civil slot is not the occurrence date of every item discussed. Ethridge’s departure is explicitly dated June 10. JTA’s Eilat report says today; its clock is unknown, leaving י״ד בסיון ה׳תש״ט 14th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709 as the adjacent sunset alternative. McDonald’s telegram reports the prior day’s meeting. The settlement report is dated reportage; the heritage database supplies May 20 for the matching founding, not a new June 10 founding.9101112
