On June 15, 1949, משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT defended foreign policy before כנסת KĔʾNESET, placing security and ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM at the center of sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM. The UN’s account of Government House also became public, reporting a withdrawal completed the previous day.12

How did Sharett connect the city and the state?

The foreign-policy address argued that life of יהודים YEHUDIM in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM depended on מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and that the state could not be conceived without the city. The wartime argument defended national security and continuity. It did not itself establish an international-status arrangement or a new frontier. מנחם MENAḤEM בגין BEGIN’s intervention in the same sitting demonstrates that parliamentary debate had its own disagreements.3

What did the UN publish today?

PAL/506 dated the Mixed Armistice Commission finding to June 13 and withdrawal to June 14. This is today’s reportage of earlier occurrences. JTA also reported the withdrawal in its June 15 bulletin. Linking the reports to the withdrawal Event keeps the publication history visible without counting a second withdrawal on June 15.5

Was the civilian budget a full war budget?

JTA described a budget of about 37 million pounds of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL, excluding defense. Its dollar equivalent was a journalistic conversion, not a second allocation. The prior-night bond vote was distinct from the proposed budget. Neither figure establishes a verified total cost of the war or new funds actually disbursed on June 15.7

How is this dated?

This is Day 564 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-06-15, using its daytime route י״ח בסיון ה׳תש״ט 18th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709. The recap groups developments and reportage; it does not give every discussed event this date. The June 15 speech is dated by the published Hebrew excerpts, the parliamentary sitting and a later UN chronology. Its hour is uncollated, so an after-sunset portion would belong to 19 Sivan rather than today’s daytime 18 Sivan. The UN and JTA issue dates do not replace June 14 as the withdrawal date.8910

Guided reflections

  • How does a speech defending sovereignty differ from a legal settlement of status?
  • Why must a press release be linked to the earlier action it reports?
