On June 19, 1949, a diplomatic conversation and Arabic newspaper reportage addressed the continuing search for peace and relief. The date is supported without inventing a battle. The records distinguish an ambassador’s assessment, instructions to negotiators and a later archive description of the day’s newspaper.12
What did Herlitz and McDonald discuss?
McDonald’s June 21 telegram places a two-hour evening conversation with אסתר הרליץ ESTER HERLIẒ on June 19. He judged a new offensive unlikely and connected that assessment with immigration and economic strain. The figure of 250,000 annually was a planning premise in the argument; it is not verified arrivals on June 19 or within this batch. His opinion is not a military order. The precise evening hour is absent.3
What did the Arabic newspaper cover?
The Palestinian Museum Digital Archive identifies a June 19 issue of Filastin and describes items on refugee care, Lausanne meetings and a border-crossing notice. The description is a catalog inventory made in 2021, not an inspected newspaper page. It supplies a located reportage lead; the exact wording, event clocks and implementation of the described notice remain unverified. The catalog’s title does not create a new border closure Event.4
Which instructions on Jerusalem were sent?
Washington’s June 19 telegram instructed presentation of the proposal to put Riley in charge of wider negotiations concerning ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Officials hoped international chairmanship would reduce tension. The proposal had an earlier drafting history, and Washington did not yet know whether it had been presented in Tel Aviv. An instruction is not acceptance by both parties or completed restoration of access.5
How is this dated?
This is Day 568 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-06-19, using its daytime route כ״ב בסיון ה׳תש״ט 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5709. The recap groups developments and reportage; it does not give every discussed event this date. FRUS 783 is headed June 21 but explicitly dates the evening conversation to June 19. An unclocked evening may belong to 23 Sivan; it is summarized here in the civil-day rundown at daytime 22 Sivan. Guided reflections
- Why should an ambassador’s annual immigration premise not enter an arrival tally?
- What can a catalog description establish before the newspaper page is inspected?
