July 7, 1949, is the reconstructed date of Tobianski’s military funeral and the documented date of an American–Israeli discussion of Gaza and refugees. Washington also clarified that its city-negotiation proposal had not been withdrawn. These were separate acts of mourning and diplomacy.123
How was Tobianski honored?
The funeral study uses the dated letter’s claim of attendance while retaining JTA’s conflicting July 8 today wording. Military honors publicly acknowledged the wrong but did not establish compensation paid or accountability completed. The letter’s partisan accusations remain the writer’s judgments.4
What did Eban explain about Gaza?
At a Washington luncheon, אבא אבן ABBA EBAN emphasized security rather than economic gain in the Gaza proposal. McGhee disputed its presentation as a trade of refugees for territory and urged constructive repatriation and resettlement. The expanded study follows the disagreement; no Egyptian consent or completed admission emerges from this conversation.6
Had Washington withdrawn its city proposal?
The July 7 reply reproduced in FRUS says it had not. A contrary report conveyed through Herlitz on July 5 was therefore not confirmed American policy. The city study distinguishes acceptance in principle, continuing reservations and practical implementation of the armistice.7
What violence did JTA report?
A July 7 brief reported two guards, one a woman, killed by an Arab grenade attack at an unnamed settlement near באר שבע BEʾER SEVA. The victims, attackers and exact settlement remain unverified. The same brief’s unexplained explosions near the Old City shortly before midnight were a separate episode; no perpetrator or causal link is established. These claims are retained as reportage without manufacturing another verified casualty tally.8
How is this dated?
The luncheon is expressly July 7; the American clarification is a July 7 reply in an editorial note. The funeral is reconstructed from the letter and conflicts with the following day’s JTA today wording. The grenade report uses today; the midnight explosions lack an explicit civil date, so they are not assigned to the same daytime route. TJD’s provisional daytime placement is י׳ בתמוז ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset would be י״א בתמוז ה׳תש״ט 11th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5709. The civil-day recap does not assign every mentioned event to that Hebrew date.9101112

- How should conflicting contemporary date wording be preserved?
- Why should an unidentified violent incident remain distinct from an unexplained explosion?
