On July 20, 1949, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and the Syrian Republic signed the last of the four general armistice agreements with neighboring governments whose armies had fought the state. This closes TJD’s chosen 599-day window for מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT. It is a documentary endpoint for the armistices, not a claim that a peace treaty existed or all violence and displacement had ended.1
What changed when the treaty was signed?
The expanded armistice article explains the immediate obligation to cease hostile military action, the demilitarized areas and mechanisms for civilian return and prisoners. Entry into force was immediate, while Annex II allowed phased withdrawals over twelve weeks. A signature establishes those obligations, not all their implementation.2
How did the government and Washington respond?
A later published translation of משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT’s July 20 address discusses withdrawal, restrictions around demilitarized settlements and authorized civilian return. Direct access to the official Knesset PDF returned a denial response in this ingestion, so its Hebrew lines and speech clock are not claimed freshly checked. Acheson’s 7 p.m. Washington telegram welcomes the signature and hopes it will advance Lausanne. Neither government acknowledgment turns the agreement into permanent peace.4
What remained unresolved in the civilian negotiations?
The UN’s July 20 progress report records incompatible approaches to governing ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM while noting substantial agreement on protecting holy places. The city study distinguishes secular government from religious supervision. At 10:30 a.m. the General Committee approved an amended report covering May 14–July 18. Approval today did not date every event in its reporting interval to July 20.6
What can the final day count?
The signed armistice completes the set of four agreements, not four peace treaties. No new death count is established by signature. The twelve bravery awards on July 17 concern earlier service and deaths; arrival figures still require passenger reconciliation; authorized family or village returns require admission and local implementation records. The Beeri hearing anticipated for today was later reported postponed. A series endpoint leaves these human questions open.8
How is this dated?
UNTS prints signature on July 20 at Hill 232 near Mahanayim. The existing armistice article preserves an earlier audit of a contemporary newspaper’s afternoon signing report, supporting כ״ג בתמוז ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5709; its minute-level discrepancy remains. The Knesset address is dated July 20 in the later translation, while the official PDF was blocked during this ingestion. The UN city report and General Committee heading are July 20; the latter covers an earlier interval. This final civil-day recap is a chosen periodization, not a date for later withdrawals or returns.10111213
