On October 4, 1948, three young defenders died at the southern position during the first daytime of ראש השנה ROŜ HAʾŜANA 5709. One had survived Nazi camps before arriving in the homeland three months earlier.
Who was lost on the first festival daytime?
The defenders repelled a renewed afternoon assault on חירבת מחאז ḤIRBAT MAḤAZ. The institutional history reports three dead and three wounded. Memorial records date the deaths of זכריה ברנד ZEḪARYA BERND, eighteen; שלמה שוארץ ŜLOMO ŜUARẒ, nineteen; and יהודה סקזיו YEHUDA SKAZIO, twenty, to October 4 and א׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 1 2 3 4
The battle study compares the separate accounts: shelling killed שלמה שוארץ ŜLOMO ŜUARẒ, while יהודה סקזיו YEHUDA SKAZIO’s memorial describes injury in an air attack and death on the way to hospital. The date agreement is not proof that all deaths occurred in one moment of the ground assault. No Egyptian casualty total is verified.
What history did one young defender carry?
The individual study of שלמה שוארץ ŜLOMO ŜUARẒ connects survival at Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen, the murder of his mother and brother, arrival in July 1948 and death defending the supply route three months later. His father’s fate and the survival of other relatives remain unknown; no last-family-survivor claim is made. 5
The records preserve distinct families and responsibilities. זכריה ברנד ZEḪARYA BERND’s biography describes agricultural work and youth instruction; יהודה סקזיו YEHUDA SKAZIO’s describes technical training and concern for his mother. Their deaths require individual evidence rather than a larger anonymous tally. 6 7
Which diplomatic acts belong to this day?
PAL/326 was published October 4 but reproduced a September 30 complaint about the military governor of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Its release is this day’s reportage, not proof that its alleged conduct first occurred that day. In Paris, George Marshall and Ernest Bevin discussed a prospective conciliation commission and membership. The memorandum records deliberation, not creation of the commission. 8 9
How is this dated?
This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-04, Day 310 of the 599-day series. TJD uses the register’s Hebcal civil-day conversion without its after-sunset option. Its daytime public route is א׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 10 The civil slot continues after sunset on ב׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709; the recap’s route does not establish the occurrence date of each item. Broadcast, conversation, attack, death, document, receipt and publication dates are distinguished above. Unknown hours remain unknown. Later investigations and cumulative figures are not new attacks or deaths. The memorials explicitly give 1 Tishrei; the September 30 cable’s October 4 publication remains reportage.
Guided reflections
- Why do the memorials’ matching death dates not establish one identical manner of death?
- What connects the nineteen-year-old survivor’s arrival in July with his defense of the state in October?
