On 1948-10-07, Day 313 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.

Who died in the renewed battle?

The Hirbat Mahaz study records renewed artillery, armor and air attacks. Four institutional memorials date deaths to October 7: אילון בילו וירחובסקי ʾEILON BILO VIRḪOVSKI, אמנון מיליקובסקי AMNON MILIKOVSKI, אשר רוזנטל AŜER ROZENTAL and יוסף שקדי YOSEF ŜKEDI. The last died when a mine detonated while he was laying it. This cause remains separate from enemy fire. 1 2

The birth and death dates given for אילון בילו וירחובסקי ʾEILON BILO VIRḪOVSKI place him four days short of eighteen, although the metadata rounds his age to eighteen. אשר רוזנטל AŜER ROZENTAL’s wartime survival does not establish that no family member survived: his biography also mentions an aunt in America. 3 4

What did diplomacy and consular security require?

A memorandum records an order to increase American Marine guards at the consulate in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM from thirteen to forty. The navy had objected that added personnel might increase incidents; the defense secretary approved the request after strong representations. This was an order, not proof that twenty-seven additional guards arrived that day. 5 JTA also reported the foreign minister’s argument for the state’s own protection of the city. 6

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-07, Day 313 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route ד׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 4th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 7 The civil slot continues after sunset on ה׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 5th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied.

Guided reflections

  • Why does a mine-laying death require a distinct cause from enemy fire?
  • What can an order for extra consular guards establish without a record of their arrival?
