On 1948-10-08, Day 314 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.
Which people arrived in the homeland?
The arrival report from Haifa counted 2,500 people, mostly from European displaced persons camps, including seventy from Turkey. Their need for housing and work entered a state whose army still drew resources into survival. The report does not identify every passenger or support a last-family-survivor claim. 1
What did military and urban reports describe?
JTA reported renewed Egyptian attacks on two strategic heights in the נגב NEGEV, repelled according to official communiqués. Its text does not name the heights; Klir’s October 8 entry supplies names, including חירבת מחאז ḤIRBAT MAḤAZ. The reports are complementary source claims, not independently inspected operation logs. In ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, the UN raised its flag over Government House when it assumed control of the neutral area; it did not thereby take over the whole city. 2 3
How were economic proposals reported?
The dispatch dates אליעזר קפלן ELIʾEZER KAPLAN’s warning about living standards to the preceding night, October 7. It also describes יוסף ויץ YOSEF WEITZ’s five-year development proposal for one million dunams. For land in Arab villages it prints two million acres, whereas Klir prints two million dunams. That unit conflict is substantial and prevents a secure common area total. Proposed compensation and cultivation were not documented completed payments or parcel transfers. 4 5
How is this dated?
This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-08, Day 314 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route ה׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 5th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 6 The civil slot continues after sunset on ו׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 6th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied.
Guided reflections
- How did immigrant arrival and wartime finance place simultaneous demands on the state?
- Why does the acres-versus-dunams conflict prevent a reliable shared land total?
