On 1948-10-10, Day 316 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.

What access was restored at the isolated compound?

The guard rotation replaced approximately thirty-five guards and carried hospital and university workers to הר הצופים HAR HA’ẒOFIM. The reported missed shots remain part of the account; the rotation does not mean normal institutional services reopened. 1

What did refugee relief reports warn?

A telegram from عمّان AMMAN warned of worsening conditions and increasing deaths in camps under Transjordan’s responsibility. Its estimate of approximately 200,000 refugees was a regional population already displaced, not 200,000 new departures on October 10. It described limited supplies, winter approaching and an unresolved distribution arrangement. It did not provide a quantified death count or establish one cause for every departure. 2

Which battle and reportage details require separate dates?

The military history describes defenders firing at two armored vehicles and a loaded truck at a distance on October 10; the vehicles withdrew. It gives no verified deaths from that exchange. Klir recorded a complaint to the Security Council about six alleged truce violations. JTA’s October 11 prison account instead places the seizure on October 10 and surrender before dawn the next morning, conflicting with the October 9 diary. The prison study keeps that uncertainty visible. 3 4 5

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-10, Day 316 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route ז׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 7th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 6 The civil slot continues after sunset on ח׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied.

Guided reflections

  • What did escorted institutional access accomplish for guards and healthcare workers?
  • Why does a regional refugee estimate not measure departures that day?
