On 1948-10-11, Day 317 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.

What did the land regulations authorize?

The regulations study distinguishes issue on October 11 from gazette publication on October 15 and later amendments. Cultivation powers, possession and ownership were different legal questions. The original limit was two years and eleven months according to Nakkara; the consolidated five-year wording belongs to a later stage. No particular expulsion or parcel seizure is inferred from enactment alone. 1

How did civil defense and prison administration respond?

Klir’s entry describes new Iraqi positions east of מענית MAʿANIT and a nationwide blackout to begin that evening as a test of readiness. A blackout order is not proof that every locality observed it. JTA reported the surrender and transfer of לח״י LEḤI prisoners to עכו AKO, with escapees still sought. The chronology of the original seizure remains disputed. 2 3

What did the symbols committee recommend?

A committee proposed a flag and emblem design. The JTA description mixes their components and includes a problematic reference to a seven-branched Hanukkah lamp. Its recommendation was not adoption of either final symbol. The flag article retains formal adoption on October 28 and distinguishes the emblem’s separate later decision. 4

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-11, Day 317 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route ח׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 5 The civil slot continues after sunset on ט׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied.

Guided reflections

  • How do later amendments change the reading of the original land regulations?
  • Why did recommended national symbols still need formal state decisions?
