On 1948-10-12, Day 318 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.

How did bombardment affect the city?

JTA’s October 12 report estimated approximately five hundred shells falling on areas inhabited by יהודים YEHUDIM during the preceding twenty-four hours. One damaged the Turkish consulate, with no injuries reported inside it. That incident-specific absence of injury is not a declaration that the entire city had no casualties. The estimate spans October 11–12 rather than five hundred securely counted impacts on October 12 alone. 1

Which public plans remained proposals?

A cabinet committee recommended December 15 for elections, but the State Council still had to approve it. The report does not establish the eventual election date. It also repeated proposed flag and crest designs, distinct from the later flag proclamation. 2 A Washington statement drafted that day proposed renewed consideration of loan applications, referring to the earlier one-hundred-million-dollar request. It was delivered to the bank on October 13 according to the editorial note, and did not announce that the money had been granted. 3

What changed at sunset?

The fast of יום הכיפורים YOM HAʾKIPURIM began after sunset on October 12, when the Ivrit date became י׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. The daytime slot remains ט׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. This boundary is essential for a daily civil recap that includes the evening without relocating its entire contents to the next date. 4

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-12, Day 318 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route ט׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 5 The civil slot continues after sunset on י׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied.

Guided reflections

  • Why does the twenty-four-hour shelling estimate span more than one civil date?
  • How did the fast’s sunset boundary affect the public date route?
