On 1948-10-13, Day 319 of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT, the state’s defense, institutions and international relations continued to develop under the second truce. This civil-date account distinguishes actions that day from earlier events reported or discussed in its sources.

How was the fast observed during war?

Klir’s October 14 entry describes the preceding day’s יום הכיפורים YOM HAʾKIPURIM observance in full congregations, camps and forward positions, with prayers for the state, its army and the dead. It qualifies the relative quiet by mentioning isolated sniper shots and an accidental mortar explosion in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. This is a retrospective dated account, not evidence that every front was silent or that no one was hurt. 1

What did the government discuss after the fast?

The economic meeting took place after the fast and therefore on י״א בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 11th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. The military history also reports relief of some positions held by the יפתח YIFTAH brigade on October 13; it is a change of personnel, not another conquest of חירבת מחאז ḤIRBAT MAḤAZ. 2 3

How did international action concern people and resources?

The Congress appeal’s reported publication brought persecution of יהודים YEHUDIM in Iraq and Egypt before the UN. Its earlier casualty figures are not new deaths on this day. Separately, the State Department’s bank statement sought renewed consideration of selected development projects; it did not grant the requested loan. An Egyptian diplomatic account and a Washington instruction considered regional territorial possibilities without recording an agreed settlement. 4 5 6 7

How is this dated?

This is the civil-date recap for 1948-10-13, Day 319 of 599. The date register and Hebcal civil-day convention, without the after-sunset option, give the daytime route י׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. 8 The civil slot continues after sunset on י״א בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 11th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. Each section distinguishes occurrence, document and publication dates; a retrospective entry is not automatically the event date. Estimates remain attributed, and uncertain times are not supplied. The economic meeting expressly occurred at the end of the fast and has its own Event on 11 Tishrei, not the recap’s daytime 10 Tishrei route.

Guided reflections

  • How did the meeting after the fast connect necessary defense with civilian livelihoods?
  • Why do reported attacks abroad remain earlier events despite the appeal’s publication that day?
