A contemporary military report records the murder of fourteen Arab al-Mawasi prisoners; public reporting also described the army’s new code and opposition to ending the separate פלמ״ח PALMAḤ headquarters.

Why is the execution not another battle death count?

The al-Mawasi study distinguishes nineteen detainees, fourteen killed, and five sent to a prisoner camp. The bodies of two soldiers found during the operation belonged to an earlier incident. Their discovery did not establish a lawful judgment against the detainees. 1

What did the military code provide?

JTA’s November 2 account reports rules on discipline, officers and enlisted personnel, daily prayer, longer periods on Shabbat and festivals, and kosher food. Common rules mattered as צה״ל ẒAHAL incorporated former formations into one state force. Reported entry into effect does not prove every unit’s implementation that day. 2

What did Mapam contest?

Mapam representatives sought a Council debate over dismantling the separate headquarters and services of פלמ״ח PALMAḤ. The dispatch says committee approval occurred earlier and was obscured by censorship; combat formations still continued. The public challenge belongs to the dispatch date, while the precise original decision remains unresolved. 3 This was the first day of Rosh Chodesh Heshvan.

How is this dated?

This is Day 339 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-11-02. 4 Its public OTD route is the daytime Hebcal conversion ל׳ בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 30th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709, without the after-sunset option. This recap distinguishes actions on the civil day from continuing episodes, reconstructed ranges and later reportage. Events after sunset belong to א׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709; each focused study explains its own supported occurrence route.

Guided reflections

  • Why do the five surviving detainees and two earlier soldiers remain separate from the fourteen executions?
  • What does continued operation of פלמ״ח PALMAḤ formations show about the headquarters decision?
