Five men were executed at مجد الكروم MAJD AL-KURUM after surrender, according to منّاع MANNAʿ’s reconstruction. On the southern coast, military sources place liberation of towns and the return to יד מרדכי YAD MORDEḤAI in a sequence centered on November 5.

What happened after surrender?

منّاع MANNAʿ describes executions during a weapons search, names the first victim as Abu Ma‘yuf, Muhammad al-Hajj, and identifies an intervention by חיים אורבך ḤAYIM ORBACH and Shafiq Abu ‘Abdu that stopped further killings. His broader estimate is eight or nine deaths. The major village study separates that estimate from the five executions. 1

What changed along the coast?

The coastal liberation study covers المجدل AL-MAJDAL, بربرة BARBARA and יד מרדכי YAD MORDEḤAI. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION’s chronology assigns November 5; Morris and November 7 reportage describe surrounding stages. The town’s remaining Arab population and later removal are separate from this military change. 2 3

What did Weizmann ask of Truman?

חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN’s November 5 letter congratulated Harry Truman on reelection and sought peace, recognition and economic support for immigrant absorption. Its figure of 62,000 arrivals since independence is his reported estimate, not a new daily arrival count. 4

How is this dated?

This is Day 342 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-11-05. This civil-day slot, corresponding in the register’s daytime Hebcal conversion to ג׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. 5 After local sunset the Hebrew date changes to ד׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 4th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. Occurrence, dispatch and later compilation dates remain separate in the sections above. The daily route does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew day. Unrecorded occurrence hours remain open for independent calendar review.

Guided reflections

  • How does surrender change the classification of the village executions?
  • Why can three reports of coastal withdrawal describe one military sequence?
