Northern command required an Arab-free border strip, while American and Israeli officials disputed armistice arrangements and refugee relief personnel warned of urgent needs. Orders, discussions and actual outcomes remain distinct.

What did the northern directive require?

The November 10 order study examines the separate voluntary-assistance and compulsory border-strip provisions. Morris supplies a 09:00 clock and the archive reference. Implementation dates and displaced household counts require records from each village. 1

Which southern positions were evacuated?

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION’s chronology lists Egyptian withdrawal from عراق سويدان ʿIRAQ SUWAYDAN village, Bayt Affa and a Karatiyya position. These are separate from the fort liberated on November 9. The passage does not date the first departure of every civilian resident. 2

What did officials discuss about an armistice?

Michael Comay and אליהו Epstein ELIYAHU met Robert Lovett in Washington. Comay feared infiltration through neutral zones and favored a clear separating line. Epstein also acknowledged domestic political effects of abandoning gains. A separate Paris telegram reported private Lebanese and Iraqi acceptance that a settlement must take account of the state’s existence; it was not formal recognition. 3 4

Why was relief still urgent?

James G. McDonald’s 17:00 telegram reported meetings held November 9 with UN, Red Cross and UNICEF officials and urged faster funding. It warned of needs, without providing an audited mortality count or proof that approved funding had reached refugees. 5

How is this dated?

This is Day 347 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-11-10. This civil-day slot, corresponding in the register’s daytime Hebcal conversion to ח׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. 6 After local sunset the Hebrew date changes to ט׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. The command order’s 09:00 issue time supports ח׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709; McDonald’s telegram describes November 9 meetings. The daily route does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew day. Unrecorded occurrence hours remain open for independent calendar review.

Guided reflections

  • What does an instruction to empty a border strip establish before individual removals are documented?
  • Why did funding approval leave relief workers warning of urgent needs?
