Local military agreements sought to stop shooting in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, while Southern Front carried out a removal operation against Arab civilians on the coastal plain.

What was agreed in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?

משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN and عبدالله التل ABDULLAH ATTALL signed a ceasefire and separate הר הצופים HAR HA’ẒOFIM supplement in the presence of UN representatives. JTA reported a ceasefire order effective at 08:00 and two soldiers wounded beforehand. The full agreement study preserves the later newspaper’s conflicting signing wording. 1 2

Who was removed from the coastal villages?

יצחק רבין YIẒḤAK RABIN’s December 2 report explicitly describes November 30 searches of eight localities. Most people found were elderly, women and children. The report records transfer toward Bayt Hanun, exceptions for some dependents, and detention of about eight young men. The expulsion study distinguishes the unidentified civilian total from the detained group and the earlier orders. 3

What does the account leave unresolved?

The recorded lack of resistance does not make organized removal voluntary. Neither does it establish later denial of return in every individual case. ניצה בן־ארי NIẒA BEN-ARI identifies a missing passage in the report and failed efforts to recover it. Household names, detention outcomes and a complete property-damage count remain unresolved. 4

How is this dated?

This is Day 367 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-11-30. TJD converts its daytime portion with the fixed Hebrew calendar to כ״ח בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 28th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. The slot does not assign every reported action to that Hebrew day. November 30 signatures are explicit in the diplomatic record; November 30 searches are explicit in a December 2 military report. The operation is not counted again on the report date. Unknown clocks retain the possibility of evening stages at כ״ט בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. 5

Guided reflections

  • How do the signatures and operational ceasefire order relate?
  • Why are eight detainees not the count of civilians expelled?
