The conference at יריחו YERIḪO endorsed Hashemite union, while the army of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL prepared a new southern offensive.
What did the conference claim?
The meeting sought union with the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan and recognized عبدالله ABDULLAH as the desired king. Stabler’s December 4 telegram reports four adopted resolutions; a later Arabic reproduction contains seven clauses. The conference study preserves that discrepancy, refugee demands and the difference between a conference request and the king’s acceptance. 1 2
What was ordered for Operation אסף ASAF?
The military history dates an Eighth Brigade operational order to December 1 at 00:40, aimed at Egyptian positions and the security of the state’s southern settlements. Its footnote gives 24:00 instead. The original order is required to resolve the clock and possible civil-day boundary. Planning did not mean the main offensive began that day; fighting began on December 5. 3
Why do these developments belong together?
Both concerned political or military control in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL, but neither was a final settlement. Hashemite supporters advanced a territorial claim, while Israeli commanders planned protection of communities and disruption of Egyptian positions. The conference was not a referendum, and the order was not proof that its objectives had already been achieved. No separate displacement operation is established for December 1 merely from these records.
How is this dated?
This is Day 368 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-01. TJD converts its daytime portion with the fixed Hebrew calendar to כ״ט בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. The slot does not assign every reported action to that Hebrew day. The conference’s occurrence date is independently described in the December 4 telegram. The order’s 00:40/24:00 disagreement can move its actual Hebrew placement between כ״ט בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709 and ל׳ בחשוון ה׳תש״ט 30th 𝑜𝑓 Ḥeŝvan, AM 5709. That uncertainty does not remove this day’s supported political event. 4
