The UN First Committee defeated a central British provision that threatened the territorial claims of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL in the נגב NEGEV. The result was a limited diplomatic gain during continuing negotiations.

What did the committee reject?

JTA identifies paragraph 4 as the proposed instructions linking conciliation to Bernadotte’s recommendations. It reports an initial defeat and a failed repeat vote under a two-thirds rule. The full vote study preserves the reported numbers and the missing original voting record. Other commission provisions received support. 1

What did the government support?

משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT supported a commission’s good offices toward agreement while opposing administrative powers that might clash with government authority. Cooperation with the UN did not require acceptance of every territorial prescription. The dispute left ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, refugees and final borders unresolved. 2

What did later reporting change?

FRUS dates adoption of a revised British draft to December 4. A separate French report also assigns a vote about incorporation into the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan to that morning; the supplied page could not be fully recovered here. Neither that later vote nor the December 11 Assembly resolution is assigned to December 3. The December 3 parade coverage likewise describes חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN’s visit the preceding evening. 3 4 5

How is this dated?

This is Day 370 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-03. TJD converts its daytime portion with the fixed Hebrew calendar to א׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The slot does not assign every reported action to that Hebrew day. The central vote is dated by the December 3 dispatch. Its nighttime wording raises a possible ב׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709 placement for the actual vote, while this daily slot uses the daytime route. Exact committee clocks and official voting sequence remain unheld. 6

Guided reflections

  • Why could a defeated paragraph be followed by adoption of a revised draft?
  • What does a nighttime dispatch leave uncertain about the vote’s Hebrew date?
