Political correspondence, a public leadership dispute and late-night military orders framed the next stage of the war.

What did Stabler report about the conference?

The December 4 telegram described the meeting at יריחו YERIḪO on December 1. Six resolutions had been proposed and four adopted, with final drafting still underway. عبدالله ABDULLAH deferred acceptance pending consultation. The conference study preserves the later seven-clause Arabic reproduction and its different transmission. Reporting a claim of political support does not make the gathering a referendum or date annexation to December 4. 1

Why did the public letter matter?

The New York Times published a letter signed by אלברט איינשטיין ALBERT EINSTEIN, חנה ארנדט HANA ARENDT and others condemning חרות ḤERUT during מנחם בגין MENAḤEM BEGIN’s visit to the United States of America. Its comparison with fascism and Nazi parties is an attributed political accusation. Its claim of 240 deaths at دير ياسين DEIR YASSIN requires independent evaluation and is not a new December casualty count. The letter study separates its December 2 signature date from December 4 publication. 2

What was ordered for the southern offensive?

At 23:00, the Eighth Brigade issued final orders for Operation אסף ASAF, aimed at positions threatening communities of יהודים YEHUDIM in the western נגב NEGEV. יצחק שדה YIẒḤAK SADE’s brigade and the 13th Battalion of גולני GOLANI prepared for the advance. The order is evidence of intention, with territorial gains beginning the following day. The campaign study treats the fighting and civilian-removal provisions separately. 3

How is this dated?

This is Day 371 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-04. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar. Its public daytime route is ב׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; after local sunset, the Hebrew date is ג׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not assign every incident this same Hebrew date. The telegram and newspaper publication are December 4 records; the conference itself occurred December 1. The 23:00 military order is after sunset and belongs to ג׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. No independently established new casualty or displacement total is assigned merely from declarations and plans. 4

Guided reflections

  • What does the disagreement over conference resolutions change about Hashemite claims?
  • Why must a published accusation against חרות ḤERUT remain distinct from a proven equivalence with Nazism?
