Egyptian infantry and tanks counterattacked the new positions, while reporting from עכו AKO described the state’s prosecution of leaders of לח״י LEḤI.

How were the positions defended?

Artillery opened about 11:15, followed by infantry and M22 tanks. At Sheikh Nuran, a tank penetrated the defense about 16:45 and withdrew after an anti-tank hit. The forces of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL held the positions. Kadish reports three dead and nineteen wounded there, and two dead and two wounded at Khirbat Ma’in: five killed and twenty-one wounded in these engagements, not a verified whole-operation total. Evacuation extended into the night. 1

What civilian-removal instructions accompanied the fighting?

The campaign study reproduces an instruction for expulsion of all inhabitants behind the intended line, associated in the narrative with the night of December 5–6. Note 32’s document dating requires inspection of the original. The instruction establishes a planned removal; population, transport and execution records are needed before counting people expelled or attributing a particular departure to it. 2

What did the trial report establish?

JTA’s December 6 bulletin described leaders נתן פרידמן־Yelin NATAN FRIEDMAN, also known as נתן Yelin־מור NATAN-MOR, and מתתיהו שמואלביץ MATITYAHU ŜMUELEVIẒ appearing before a guarded military court in עכו AKO. Charges concerned the prohibited organization after Folke Bernadotte’s assassination; they conducted their own defense with legal assistance. The December 6 “today” wording conflicts with a reported December 5 New Zealand dateline cited in the intake, whose original has not been recovered. The court record is needed before fixing the opening date. A trial opening does not establish guilt or a conviction. 3

How is this dated?

This is Day 373 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-06. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar. Its public daytime route is ד׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 4th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; after local sunset, the Hebrew date is ה׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 5th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not assign every incident this same Hebrew date. The counterattacks are explicitly December 6 in Kadish. The late-afternoon fight and overnight evacuations may cross into the following Hebrew day. The December 6 trial report is dated reportage; the rival December 5 dateline remains a source gap. Neither the expulsion instruction nor an accusation establishes implementation or adjudication. 4

Guided reflections

  • Which records could identify the five soldiers reported killed?
  • How does a removal order differ from a verified civilian displacement?
