The UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at an evening meeting, while the British government continued to withhold recognition of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and military planning continued.
What did the evening UN vote establish?
Forty-eight members supported the declaration, none opposed and eight abstained. מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL was not yet a voting member. The declaration study explains its protections and the difference between an international standard and actual liberty or safe return. The Paris meeting began at 21:00, so the event belongs to the next Hebrew day, even though its official civil date is December 10. 1 2
What did Parliament say about the new state?
Churchill emphasized effective government and a victorious army and acknowledged Arab displacement through military advances. Mayhew replied that recognition required assurances concerning borders, the truce and further claims. The debate study distinguishes this acknowledgment from evidence of individual expulsions. Parliament’s discussion did not amount to recognition, and the speech did not create a new displacement event. 3
What was planned for Operation חורב ḤOREV?
The recovered military history dates a General Staff warning order signed by יגאל ידין YIGAL YADIN to December 10. Its objective was defeat and removal of Egyptian military forces from ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. That military objective concerns an invading army, distinct from orders concerning civilian inhabitants in Operation אסף ASAF. The later campaign began December 22; the warning order is planning, not evidence that the main attack began on December 10. 4
How is this dated?
This is Day 377 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-10. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar. Its public daytime route is ח׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; after local sunset, the Hebrew date is ט׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not assign every incident this same Hebrew date. The December 10 daily slot uses its daytime marker, but the declaration’s 21:00 meeting belongs to ט׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The parliamentary speeches and military warning order retain December 10 civil dating; no original military issue clock is held. The December 22 offensive is a separate occurrence. 5
