A judicial challenge to continued British detention and diplomatic reporting about Hashemite policy placed liberty, political rivalry and negotiation at the center of the day’s evidence.
What did the Cyprus court require?
The judge ordered the Xylotymbou commander to appear on December 29 and justify confinement of a reported 5,164 יהודים YEHUDIM. Their lawyer disputed detention based solely on military age. The court study separates counsel’s argument, a show-cause order and any later judgment. No release occurred merely because the commander was required to answer. The figure identifies the reported case cohort rather than a complete camp census. 1
What political disagreement did Stabler describe?
At 16:00, Stabler reported that عبدالله ABDULLAH had sought Egyptian support for the conference resolutions, while al-Nuqrashi objected to separate Hashemite policy. He also reported contact between אליהו ששון ELIYAHU SASSON and عبدالله التل ABDULLAH ATTALL through משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN. The expanded conference study distinguishes reported contact from a concluded agreement. The telegram is evidence of a diplomat’s near-contemporary account, not an independently held copy of every underlying letter. 2
Why is the parliamentary endorsement still disputed?
A later encyclopedia dates endorsement to December 13; Klir’s retrospective chronology places it under December 14. The original parliamentary journal has not been recovered. TJD retains the conflict without inventing a new December 13 ratification or merging it with the December 1 conference. Conference resolutions, government policy, parliamentary support and eventual constitutional union are separate actions. 3 4
How is this dated?
This is Day 380 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-13. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar. Its public daytime route is י״א בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 11th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; after local sunset, the Hebrew date is י״ב בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 12th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not assign every incident this same Hebrew date. JTA describes the court order as issued December 13. Stabler’s telegram is explicitly dated that day at 16:00; its references to prior messages and reported contacts do not supply their exact occurrence hours. The parliamentary December 13/14 dispute remains open. The later scheduled hearing does not change this day’s order date. 5
