מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL publicly denied a reported high-level peace approach, while acknowledging military contact with Hashemite forces. Recognition remained contested, and the inherited airlift arrival requires careful dating.
What contact did the spokesman acknowledge?
The December 16 JTA dispatch records denial of a reported offer by عبدالله ABDULLAH to confer with חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN through Ralph Bunche. The spokesman acknowledged contact between משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN and عبدالله التل ABDULLAH ATTALL, and a telephone connection between military commands in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. His description places their meeting on the preceding Sunday, December 12. 1
Denial of the alleged diplomatic approach did not deny every channel of communication. Nor does military liaison establish an agreed peace settlement or prove what private intermediaries did. The public statement is evidence of what the government said that day.
When was the Belgian position announced?
The December 16 dispatch says Paul-Henri Spaak announced the preceding evening that the Kingdom of Belgium would withhold recognition and support for UN admission until the situation was settled. The announcement therefore belongs to December 15 evening, with a separate later abstention on December 17. Its report date is not its occurrence date. 2
Recognition by individual governments and a collective UN vote were different tests of diplomatic standing. The membership study identifies the voting mechanism without calling abstention a veto.
What can be established about the first airlift arrival?
The existing first-arrival article retains December 16 provisionally. It now explains the missing flight evidence and separates that claim from JDC’s December 14 phase opening and Levitan’s December 15 departure. The inherited calendar label cannot make a passenger movement verified by itself. 3 4
A landing record would connect the refugees’ journey to a specific arrival day and time. Until recovered, no invented flight roster or number is assigned to December 16. Their route to ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL remains part of the larger rescue history without forcing each milestone into this date.
How is this dated?
This is Day 383 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-16. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar as י״ד בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 14th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. An occurrence after local sunset falls on ט״ו בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 15th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. This daily route identifies the civil-day rundown; it does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew date. The spokesman’s statement is dated December 16 by JTA. Spaak’s announcement was the prior evening; Dayan’s reported meeting was the prior Sunday. The first-arrival article’s December 16 date remains inherited and provisional, pending transport records. 5 6
