The Security Council demanded an immediate ceasefire as fighting continued. Contemporary reportage predicted collapse of Egyptian positions, but those predictions did not establish liberation of עזה AZA or the end of the الفالوجة AL-FALUJA pocket.

What did the Council decide?

The Resolution 66 study records eight votes in favor, none against and three abstentions. It separates immediate ceasefire, implementation of earlier instructions and observer access. Its January 7 committee-meeting instruction is not a January 6 deadline or a completed agreement. 1

International pressure shaped the remaining time available to the offensive. It did not itself prove that every unit ceased firing as soon as the vote ended.

How reliable was the battlefield headline?

The December 29 dispatch’s headline depicted עזה AZA encircled and Egyptian positions disintegrating. Its text combined reported advances, prisoner assessments and Israeli predictions. The continued presence of the enemy army at עזה AZA and in the الفالوجة AL-FALUJA pocket requires a narrower conclusion than complete defeat or liberation of עזה AZA. 2

Its account of Arab refugees heading toward Egypt is a reported movement estimate. No household list or departure orders were inspected. It cannot classify every departure as expulsion, voluntary flight or organized evacuation.

Which dates remain unsettled?

The same dispatch implies the previous day for ניצנה NIẒANA’s liberation, while inspected military histories give December 27. The event study retains both. חיסול ḤISUL’s outcome belongs to a night-of-battle sequence, and דוד טל DAVID TAL instead dates withdrawal to December 29. The battle article preserves this disagreement. 3

The day therefore has both a securely dated Council proceeding and reportage whose occurrence dates are qualified. A daily slot must not flatten their different levels of precision.

How is this dated?

This is Day 396 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-29. Its daytime public route is כ״ז בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 27th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset belongs to כ״ח בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 28th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. This route identifies the daily rundown, not the clock or Hebrew date of every event it covers. The official resolution identifies December 29 adoption; its final local vote clock is unheld. The JTA edition is December 29 but includes earlier and predicted events. Their publication date is not substituted for their occurrence dates. 4 5

Guided reflections

  • Why must a newspaper prediction yield to the army’s continuing presence?
  • Which original record would most improve the precision of this day’s account, and what would it establish?
