דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION received reports from the southern command and considered diplomatic strategy. Contemporary dispatches also reported arrests and dangers facing יהודים YEHUDIM in Yemen and Aden, and the burial of earlier aircraft-crash victims in Greece.
What did the southern commander report?
The December 30 diary recorded יגאל אלון YIGAL ALLON describing forces near El Arish and the airport area, with estimates of regular and other enemy forces. These were operational assessments, not independently reconciled strength returns or proof that the city was held. Possible return to the ניצנה NIẒANA area remained a proposed movement, not completed withdrawal. 1
The Sinai Sinai study gives the maneuver’s command dispute and diplomatic cost. The diary also recounted a reported Arab army meeting from the previous day; proposals concerning deployment around Hebron and Bethlehem were not verified implementation.
What political arrangements were considered?
The diary explored a relationship with Hashemite authority through discussions involving Israeli officials. These were strategic ideas, not a signed treaty. A December 30 Le Monde account describes an Israeli argument for converting truce into a general armistice, but the original accessible text has not been recovered. Its exact French wording is not reconstructed. 2 3
Military bargaining and diplomacy could proceed together. The existence of a policy conversation did not end the fighting or guarantee its terms would be accepted.
What persecution was reported?
The December 30 JTA report said six communal leaders in Sana'a had been detained after two girls’ bodies were found near a synagogue, and feared a fabricated ritual-murder accusation. This documents a serious allegation and danger of blood libel; it is not a recovered indictment, conviction or proof that a formal charge was filed that day. 4
The dispatch also described anti-Jewish agitation and failures of British protection in Aden, with further abduction and conversion allegations that remain independently unverified. The Kingdom of Yemen and British-administered Aden had different authorities. Neither geographic proximity nor a common report makes their policies identical.
When were the crash victims buried?
The December 31 bulletin said most victims of the December 21 crash were buried yesterday at Kalamata. It described three members of the Kuperman family taken to Athens and a request to transfer the Band family’s bodies to Vienna. Those arrangements belong to December 30 burial reportage; the crash deaths were earlier. 5
The family names remain source-owned identification pending passenger and cemetery records. A request for transfer is not a completed reburial, and no deliberate crash cause is inferred.
How is this dated?
This is Day 397 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-30. Its daytime public route is כ״ח בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 28th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset belongs to כ״ט בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. This route identifies the daily rundown, not the clock or Hebrew date of every event it covers. The diary is December 30. The arrest dispatch was published that day but does not supply the arrest clock. The next day’s yesterday wording reconstructs burial on December 30, separately from the December 21 crash. 6 7
