צה״ל ẒAHAL prepared the renewed offensive toward רפיח RAFIAḤ while חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN appealed to Harry Truman over the diplomatic pressure surrounding the Sinai Sinai campaign. Contemporary reportage also brought news of a bombing in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, and a later diary entry identifies the return of two nurses from captivity on this civil date.
Why did the offensive turn toward רפיח RAFIAḤ?
At the staff meeting, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION recorded the plan to begin that night. גולני GOLANI and הראל HAREL forces were to threaten the Egyptian supply route, with armored support for a breach. The night opening and seizure of individual positions must remain distinct from the daytime preparation. The full רפיח RAFIAḤ study follows the cemetery position, sandstorm counterattack, and losses without treating the crossroads as captured.1 2
What case did ויצמן WEIZMANN put to Truman?
The January 3 letter acknowledged the frontier crossing and asserted that מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL had no territorial ambitions in the Kingdom of Egypt. That declaration is evidence of ויצמן WEIZMANN’s argument, not proof of the purpose of every military order. A separate American instruction entertained a territorial settlement involving the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan; it did not establish Palestinian consent or an executed transfer.3 4
What happened to civilians and captives?
The ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM bombing dossier distinguishes the reported January 2 evening attack from January 3 reportage and retains five versus seven injuries. The aircraft’s identity remains unverified. The January 6 diary separately reports that חוה CHAVA Kirshbaum and Malka Shalit, nurses who had voluntarily accompanied prisoners, returned from captivity in the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan on Monday, January 3. The return’s clock and transfer record are unheld.5 6 7
פלמ״ח PALMAḤ memorials date the deaths of Yair Raznik and Tzvi רוטשילד ROTHSCHILD to January 3. The records describe different biographies, including Rothschild’s journey from Santiago and study in the United States before volunteering. They should not be assigned automatically to the later night capture solely because both relate to רפיח RAFIAḤ.8 9
How is this dated?
This is Day 401 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-01-03. Its daytime public route is ב׳ בטבת ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset belongs to ג׳ בטבת ה׳תש״ט 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709. The recap route dates the civil-day account, not every event it covers. The dated diary or documentary report supplies this day’s developments; relative dates and later memorial, publication, or dispatch dates are identified beside the affected claims. Night action, policy discussion, proposal, and implemented action remain distinct.10
Guided reflections
- Why must the January 3 evening plan remain distinct from the cemetery position’s night capture?
- How does ויצמן WEIZMANN’s stated purpose compare with the military movements reported that day?
