The designated ceasefire took effect at 14:00 local time, formally ending Operation חורב ḤOREV. Reports of fire around רפיח RAFIAḤ continued, and the loss of five Royal Air Force aircraft opened another dangerous confrontation for מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL.
What did the ceasefire order settle?
The campaign-end study distinguishes the order from actual compliance. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION recorded יגאל ידין YIGAEL YADIN’s report that orders had been issued; later reports described continued Egyptian attacks, and Yadin suspected that some soldiers of צה״ל ẒAHAL also kept fighting after receiving the order. These reports do not adjudicate each violation or support a blanket assignment of blame to one army.1 2
יגאל אלון YIGAL ALLON reported that the crossroads itself had not been taken, although surrounding positions impeded Egyptian use of the road. The distinction matters to an account of what the campaign achieved. The diary also locates troops south of the frontier; it does not establish permanent retention of each position.3
What happened to the airmen?
In two successive formations, four RAF Spitfires and a Tempest were shot down. Two airmen died and two were captured. Representatives of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL alleged attacks on their troops; the United Kingdom maintained that the aircraft were conducting reconnaissance. The RAF confrontation study keeps allegations, denial, and later mistaken-identity reconstruction separate. The decisive operational evidence remains incomplete.4 5 6
What did the ceasefire hour mean for the wounded?
The memorial for חוה לויצקי CHAVA LEVITZKY describes her treating wounded Shmuel Friedman when shellfire killed both. It places heavy shelling around 14:00 on January 7. This later biography exposes the human stakes at the designated ceasefire hour without independently identifying the unit that fired each shell. The memorial for Shlomo Itach reports death in an air attack; יעקב שפיר YAʾAKOV SHAPIR’s individual record also gives January 7, with a different ambush account. Four named deaths are a documented minimum for this dossier, not a final daily roll.7 8 9 10
How is this dated?
This is Day 405 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-01-07. Its daytime public route is ו׳ בטבת ה׳תש״ט 6th 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset belongs to ז׳ בטבת ה׳תש״ט 7th 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709. The recap route dates the civil-day account, not every event it covers. The dated diary or documentary report supplies this day’s developments; relative dates and later memorial, publication, or dispatch dates are identified beside the affected claims. Night action, policy discussion, proposal, and implemented action remain distinct.11
Guided reflections
- What evidence could assign responsibility for the shellfire described around the ceasefire hour?
- Why does the five-aircraft loss not establish whether the RAF initiated combat?
