A limited withdrawal on the northern frontier and reports from military and diplomatic representatives reached the government. The evidence places actual movement, proposed operations and retrospective allegations in different categories.
What changed on the northern frontier?
The JTA dispatch says צה״ל ẒAHAL left four villages in the Lebanese Republic today
. The full account retains their unidentified names and the limited character of the arrangement. The sources do not establish a return of residents or a general armistice. In the diary, a proposal to release another five villages was still a proposal and cannot be added to the four completed withdrawals.12
What did the delegates report about the king?
משה דיין MOŜE DAYAN and אליהו ששון ELIYAHU SASSON described their January 16 meeting to Ben-Gurion. The record includes disagreements over access, neighboring armies and prisoners, and the king’s request for further contact. January 17 is the reporting date. It is not a second royal meeting established by the diary heading.34
What removal of civilians was proposed?
משה כרמל MOŜE CARMEL discussed an offensive around جنين JENIN and the Wadi Ara area that would drive residents away and improve the military line. יגאל ידין YIGAL YADIN disputed the time estimate. This documents a proposed removal of civilians as part of military planning. It does not establish approval, execution, or a number expelled on January 17.5
What allegation concerned earlier fighting?
The diary records יגאל אלון YIGAL ALON’s account that a platoon had ordered fire on Egyptian soldiers who were surrendering during fighting at Iraq al-Manshiyya. The allegation is serious evidence of a report by a senior commander, and requires operational records and testimony to determine what happened. The entry does not supply a separate occurrence date for the shooting. The supplied research’s October assignment cannot be established from this diary passage alone; no new January 17 shooting event or casualty figure is created from it.6
The manpower return copied in the entry is dated January 6. It likewise cannot establish deaths sustained on January 17. Preserving these distinctions keeps the government’s knowledge, commanders’ intentions and reported actions visible without turning them into invented completed events.

Guided reflections
- What records could establish the occurrence date and outcome of the surrendering-soldiers allegation?
- Why does the proposed removal at Jenin require different evidence from a completed expulsion?
