At 11:00 London time, the British government publicly announced de facto recognition of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. Australia and New Zealand also announced recognition that day, according to the Australian diplomatic edition. Foreign acknowledgment was broadening while frontiers, refugees and military arrangements remained unresolved.12
What did British recognition leave open?
The focused study reproduces the announcement and its distinction from the preceding evening’s decision. Holmes reported explicit guidance that recognition did not determine frontiers. An intended exchange of representatives remained a next step. The announcement acknowledged government authority, without establishing a final peace settlement.
Were the Commonwealth forms identical?
Evatt’s January 26 cable sought coordinated action with Peter Fraser and criticized a narrow statement. The official edition dates both announcements 29. Klir records full recognition by Australia and de facto recognition by New Zealand, but the original final notes and New Zealand annual-report passage were not accessible in this ingestion. The documentary coordination and the reported legal forms therefore retain distinct evidentiary status.34
Why are other countries’ dates unresolved?
The Swiss archival lead and Italian and Chilean diplomatic histories point to different dates from the grouped January 29 list. The inaccessible original instruments prevent a single-day recognition tally. The later JTA transcription also has an internally inconsistent phrase in the communiqué. Exact issue collation is needed before repairing or quoting that wording as a completed collective act.5
The existing El Tor transfer article supplies another January 29 account: a witness reports fifty imprisoned יהודים YEHUDIM transferred within the Kingdom of Egypt. That earlier article’s source and hearsay limits remain controlling; recognition announcements elsewhere do not resolve those families’ confinement or establish a new release. No new transfer count has been independently reconstructed here.
How is this dated?
This is Day 427 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-01-29. Its public OTD route is כ״ח בטבת ה׳תש״ט 28th 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709, the daytime fixed-Hebrew-calendar conversion in the checked series register. This slot does not establish the Hebrew occurrence date of every incident discussed. The British announcement at 11:00 London time preceded sunset. The Australian edition dates the other Commonwealth announcements to January 29 without precise clocks. January 30 coverage does not establish another decision.6 Events after local sunset on this civil date use כ״ט בטבת ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Tevet, AM 5709; exact clocks remain unverified unless stated above.

- What legal questions did de facto recognition explicitly leave unsettled?
- Why must a national recognition record be checked separately from a grouped press list?
