JTA described liquidation of the Rashid camp near Aden while restrictions still prevented some יהודים YEHUDIM from leaving.

What did the Aden report say about departure?

JTA described liquidation of the Rashid camp near Aden while restrictions still prevented some יהודים YEHUDIM from leaving. Approximately 2,800 people, including more than 550 orphans, had reportedly been flown to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL since the previous year. The dispatch’s remaining-population categories are damaged and partly unclear: it mentions approximately 700 restricted people and a further group for whom passages were being arranged. They must not be treated as an audited set of mutually exclusive groups.1

Which coercive measure was threatened?

The same dispatch says approximately 1,000 יהודים YEHUDIM outside the camp faced threatened deportation to Yemen, with the Joint Distribution Committee paying fares toward the homeland. The English Empire’s restrictions are documented as contemporary reporting; actual implementation for each person remains unverified. The 2,800 is a retrospective airlift total, not departures on February 8, and the orphans are included within it. No individual sole-surviving-family-member claim follows from these population figures.2

Whose earlier deaths were remembered?

A cemetery ceremony on Cyprus commemorated 110 earlier burials, described as 61 adults and 49 infants. JTA separately recalls two detainees reportedly shot by guards, but their damaged names need the original issue and burial records. These are earlier deaths remembered that day, not a February 8 fatality increment. The closure study preserves this human cost beside the final transport history.3

What did the recognition announcement establish?

A separate dispatch reports recognition by the United States of Brazil, conveyed to the Jewish Agency. The original note and precise legal form remain unheld, so the contemporary announcement is retained without a de facto/de jure classification or a new cumulative recognition tally.4

How is this dated?

This is Day 437 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-02-08. TJD converts 1949-02-08 through the fixed Hebrew calendar to the daytime route ט׳ בשבט ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. Sunset can begin the following Hebrew date, as qualified below.

This is Day 437 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-02-08. Its public OTD route is ט׳ בשבט ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709, the daytime fixed-Hebrew-calendar conversion in the series register. February 8 dates these reports and the cemetery ceremony; airlift and burial totals concern earlier periods, and threatened deportation is not established as executed. Events after local sunset use י׳ בשבט ה׳תש״ט 10th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; this daily route does not date every reported incident. 5

Guided reflections

  • Which developments occurred that day, and which reached readers through later or retrospective reporting?
  • What records would turn the attributed figures or proposed measures into a person-level account?
