The elected Constituent Assembly began its work in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM on the annual tree festival, joining national institution-building with remembrance of those who defended access to the city.

What did the elected assembly open?

חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN addressed the representatives and יוסף שפרינצק YOSEF SPRINZAK was chosen to preside. The expanded opening article retains the existing identity while separating the opening from the later law that formally named the First כנסת KNESSET. The original protocol endpoint is restricted; Klir’s reproduced speech and the next day’s English publication remain identified witnesses.12

Who was remembered at the memorial planting?

Klir describes דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION planting at שער הגיא SHAAR HAGAI, with burned convoy vehicles still visible beside the road. The occasion honored deaths from earlier fighting to keep supplies reaching ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. A six-million-tree forest target is a plan, not a count completed that morning or a count of war fatalities.3

Which settlement reports need further identification?

A February 15 dispatch says two הפועל המזרחי HAʾPOʾEL HAʾMIZRAḤI settlements were founded yesterday. It calls them N’tivot and Morasha and associates one with former defenders of כפר דרום KFAR DAROM. Locations and establishment records remain uncollated; N’tivot is not automatically the modern town of Netivot. These are attributed reports dated through the dispatch’s relative wording.4

How is this dated?

This is Day 443 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-02-14. The date register uses its fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion ט״ו בשבט ה׳תש״ט 15th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset the Hebrew date is ט״ז בשבט ה׳תש״ט 16th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The occurrence is February 14; the speech and settlement dispatches were published February 15. The route identifies this civil-day account and does not assign all related events or reported totals to its daytime Hebrew date.5

Guided reflections

  • How did the tree-planting memorial connect sacred time to wartime supply and defense?
  • Why must the assembly’s opening be distinguished from its legal renaming?
