The remaining dispute over באר שבע BEʾER SEVA occupied the armistice diplomacy, while the commission heard a distinct position from the Kingdom of Iraq. Communities of יהודים YEHUDIM abroad also responded to diplomatic recognition.

Was withdrawal from באר שבע BEʾER SEVA completed?

Warren Austin’s February 18 telegram transmitted Bunche’s message about Egyptian demands for withdrawal from the town, rather than all surrounding territory. The delegation of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL refused a formal evacuation obligation and reported construction of camps outside it. Planned camps and diplomatic inference do not establish a completed troop movement.1

What did the Iraqi foreign minister offer?

UN G/8 dates Abdullah Hafidh’s Baghdad meeting February 18. He urged refugee return before comprehensive peace and said his government would accept armistice arrangements made by neighboring Arab governments. This did not make the Kingdom of Iraq a signatory to the Egyptian talks or prove its troops withdrew that day.2

How was recognition received abroad?

A JTA report describes DAIA and the Organización Israelita Argentina sending welcoming messages to President Juan Perón. The report establishes institutional responses by organizations of יהודים YEHUDIM, not the date of the Argentine Republic’s original recognition instrument. No new diplomatic-recognition total is derived from the response.3

How is this dated?

This is Day 447 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-02-18. The date register uses its fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion י״ט בשבט ה׳תש״ט 19th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset the Hebrew date is כ׳ בשבט ה׳תש״ט 20th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The telegram and UN summary are dated February 18; the recognition dispatch concerns responses whose individual transmission clocks are uncollated. The route identifies this civil-day account and does not assign all related events or reported totals to its daytime Hebrew date.4

Guided reflections

  • Why does constructing military camps not prove withdrawal from a town?
  • How do the Iraqi and Egyptian positions resist a single account of every Arab government’s aims?
