Draft acceptance advanced the Egyptian armistice talks, but reservations prevented describing this day as the date of a signed agreement. Territorial claims also remained explicit in talks with the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan.

What did the Rhodes meeting settle?

According to משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT’s account transmitted by McDonald the next day, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL accepted the draft and appendices at the February 20 meeting. Egyptian reservations concerned defensive units and באר שבע BEʾER SEVA. The full draft-acceptance study checks this against Klir’s compressed account; February 24 remains the signature date.1

What did King Abdullah claim?

UN G/10 records Abdullah and Abu al-Huda meeting the commission at Chouleh on February 20. Their demands concerned ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, western neighborhoods and a railway station. Those were requests for territorial control, not areas transferred that day. Their willingness to consider separate talks coexisted with continuing disagreement over territory and refugees.2

Were there no contacts between representatives?

Abu al-Huda distinguished official contacts from discussions by individuals. American reporting documents contacts, so his denial must be tested against what he meant by official. Military armistice negotiation also did not automatically acknowledge the other party’s permanent territorial claims. No civilian return or completed troop withdrawal is counted from these proposals.3

How is this dated?

This is Day 449 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1949-02-20. The date register uses its fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion כ״א בשבט ה׳תש״ט 21st 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset the Hebrew date is כ״ב בשבט ה׳תש״ט 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The February 21 telegram reports a February 20 occurrence; UN G/10 directly dates the royal meeting February 20. The route identifies this civil-day account and does not assign all related events or reported totals to its daytime Hebrew date.4

Guided reflections

  • How does acceptance by one delegation differ from agreement by both governments?
  • What is lost when territorial demands are reported as completed transfers?
