Diplomatic reporting exposed tensions between refugee return and the reception of יהודים YEHUDIM. A separate report followed refugees moving through San Francisco.

What did the diplomatic dispatch establish?

The McDonald study examines his February 22 analysis and same-day conversation with משה שרת MOŜE SHARETT. It separates attributed official positions, an absence of complete cabinet policy and American recommendations about return. Palestinian property and the needs of incoming יהודים YEHUDIM were material stakes, not merely abstractions.1

What did the Egyptian prime minister seek?

Patterson’s Cairo telegram, sent at 14:00, reports Abdel Hadi Pasha pressing for refugee return and discussing באר שבע BEʾER SEVA as an obstacle to agreement. Patterson’s hope of resolving the obstacle was an expectation, not Egyptian acceptance. The telegram adds an Egyptian position reported by an American participant.2

Which transport stage did the refugees reach?

JTA’s February 23 issue says the General Gordon arrived the previous night. Its 447 passengers bound for מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL boarded a train on February 23; others had different destinations. Arrival in San Francisco on February 22 was not arrival in the homeland and, being at night, probably belongs to כ״ד בשבט ה׳תש״ט 24th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The damaged overall total is not reconstructed.3

How is this dated?

This is Day 451 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-02-22. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is כ״ג בשבט ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset it is כ״ד בשבט ה׳תש״ט 24th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The dispatch supplies February 22; the arrival is reconstructed from the following issue’s previous-night wording. The route identifies this daily account; it does not assign every earlier occurrence, evening event or reported total to its daytime Hebrew date.4

Guided reflections

  • How did competing refugee policies connect personal safety, property and the reception of יהודים YEHUDIM?
  • Why must a transit arrival remain separate from arrival in מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL?
