חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN consulted parties about a cabinet, while diplomatic accounts preserved competing arrangements for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and refugees.

What did the parties request?

JTA dates consultations at רחובות REḪOVOT to February 23. מפ״ם MAPAM offered participation under דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION while demanding a labor majority, nationalization, progressive taxation and balanced foreign relations. Other factions also met the president. A demand was not an accepted coalition term or completed cabinet; earlier invitations remain separate.1

What did عبدالله ABDULLAH’s interview establish?

JTA relayed The Times’ account of King عبدالله ABDULLAH disclaiming a claim to the western part of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and opposing international control of its Old City. The original interview date and newspaper page are unheld. Promises of religious access and economic cooperation were stated positions, not an agreement or proof of later access.2

Which Lebanese meeting was reported later?

FRUS 484, dated February 24, identifies the commissioners’ February 23 meeting in Beirut. Refugee return and international arrangements for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM were tests advanced by Lebanese leaders. Its separate February 21 Syrian discussion must not be moved to this day. Political conciliation was not the later bilateral armistice.3

How is this dated?

This is Day 452 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-02-23. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is כ״ד בשבט ה׳תש״ט 24th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset it is כ״ה בשבט ה׳תש״ט 25th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. JTA explicitly dates the consultations; the next-day diplomatic note supplies the Lebanese meeting date. The route identifies this daily account; it does not assign every earlier occurrence, evening event or reported total to its daytime Hebrew date.4

Guided reflections

  • How do coalition demands differ from the authority of an agreed government?
  • What would distinguish a diplomatic position from a promise honored in practice?
