Captives returned to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, while a report from Istanbul described renewed departure by יהודים YEHUDIM toward the homeland.
Which prisoners returned?
JTA reports another group of 150 captives reaching ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM from المفرق MAFRAQ on February 25, many captured when the Etzion communities fell. Their return concerned the Arab Legion, not implementation of the Egyptian treaty. Individual lists are needed to distinguish this group from other reported transfers.1
What changed in emigration policy?
JTA reports the lifting of restrictions in the Republic of Turkey, with most of 1,000 approved emigrants already departed and 1,000 new applications. The December 1 report documents the earlier restriction. Neither application nor departure is arrival in מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL; the original lifting order and exact effective day are unheld.23
What can be known about families?
The reports make return from captivity and movement toward permanent refuge concrete. They do not provide complete family rosters or establish a last survivor of a family murdered in the Holocaust. Those claims require individual records; unnamed households do not become an invented daily casualty total.
How is this dated?
This is Day 454 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-02-25. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is כ״ו בשבט ה׳תש״ט 26th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset it is כ״ז בשבט ה׳תש״ט 27th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709. The prisoner dispatch expressly reports today; the lifting of the restriction is reported by this date rather than securely enacted on it. The route identifies this daily account; it does not assign every earlier occurrence, evening event or reported total to its daytime Hebrew date.4
Guided reflections
- Why do prisoner lists matter when several exchanges occur close together?
- How do departure permissions, applications and arrivals measure different stages of עלייה ALIYA?
