A UN membership debate coincided with humanitarian testimony challenging an unqualified account of voluntary departure from the former pocket.

What did the Security Council debate?

The membership study dates resumed consideration to March 3. Warren Austin promised American support; the council’s recommendation followed March 4 and admission May 11. The unavailable meeting PDF is not presented as inspected.1

What did relief workers record?

The Quaker study distinguishes March 3 intentions to stay and the mukhtar’s testimony from March 4 eyewitness injuries. Morris mediates the original AFSC report. The record supports reported coercion and contradicts universal unpressured departure; it does not supply a March 3 death count.2

What did אבא אבן ABBA EBAN ask supporters to fund?

JTA reports his appeal to approximately 2,500 women at the United Jewish Appeal campaign in New York City. He stressed urgent immigration support and continued diplomatic relations with both major powers. An audience estimate and appeal do not establish money received or transport financed.3

Was the Hungarian crackdown confirmed?

JTA relayed a Times dispatch alleging dissolution of organizations promoting ציונות ẒIYONUT and expulsion of ten leaders during the preceding week. The federation’s March 10 denial and March 25 announcement of its own dissolution complicate that chronology. Neither proves freedom from pressure; the original orders and the Új Élet issue remain unheld. The claim stays disputed, not a confirmed March 3 government action.456

How is this dated?

This is Day 460 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-03-03. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is ב׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709; after sunset it is ג׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. FRUS dates the debate March 3; Morris dates the relief entry; JTA issue dates do not settle every event it reports. The route identifies this daily account; it does not assign every earlier occurrence, evening event or reported total to its daytime Hebrew date.7

Guided reflections

  • Why must membership discussion, recommendation and admission have separate dates?
  • How should testimony about threats be weighed alongside guarantees of safety and permission to remain?
