Israeli forces reached eastern objectives, prisoner repatriations ended and diplomacy confronted the southern advance.

Which objectives did Israeli forces reach?

The Ein Gedi and Mezada study preserves the disagreement between an evening March 8 embarkation and a March 9 departure. The operation secured positions without a battle in the later accounts. The eastern גולני GOLANI route separately encountered firing near ע'רנדל GHARANDAL on March 9; its withdrawal sequence continues on March 10.12

What did the diplomats report?

An American memorandum dated March 10 records a March 9 complaint from the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan about the advance and an Israeli denial. The competing claims require separate attribution. Another March 9 dispatch describes the first joint Rhodes meeting, lasting about two and a half hours and considering eleven points. A meeting agenda is not a signed settlement.34

Who arrived, and whose captivity ended?

JTA reported about 2,000 immigrants arriving from the Republic of Turkey. That is an arrival claim, distinct from an authorization or future departure. The Egyptian prisoner repatriations were completed over March 7–9; their total is recorded once in the exchange study. The two transport histories cannot be combined merely because they share a date.56

How is this dated?

This is Day 466 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-03-09. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is ח׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 8th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709; after sunset it is ט׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 9th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. This route identifies the daily recap. It does not assign earlier occurrences, evening movements, cumulative counts or later newspaper issues to the daytime Hebrew date. The cited source dates and reconstructed clocks are distinguished in the sections above and in the linked major studies.7

Guided reflections

  • How should the conflicting embarkation accounts affect the eastern operation’s date?
  • What would immigration and prisoner manifests reveal that their reported totals cannot?
