Municipal defense of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM and protest against antizionist persecution abroad joined the day’s account of restored sovereignty.

What did Iraqi death-sentence reports cause?

JTA circulated Baghdad radio’s claim of death sentences against seven יהודים YEHUDIM accused of aiding ציונות ẒIYONUT. Residents of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM with origins in the Kingdom of Iraq protested news understood as executions. The full study preserves the March 18 clarification that the sentences were in absentia. Protest against feared killings does not prove those killings occurred.12

How did the mayor defend authority in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?

At 11:45 a.m. דניאל אוסטר DANIEL AUSTER addressed the UN Jerusalem committee. He rejected international government and argued that the sacred attachment of יהודים YEHUDIM concerned the whole city. His hearing study preserves the municipal argument and his acknowledgment of cooperation in חיפה HAIFA. The later JTA issue belongs to March 17; it reports this March 15 appearance.34

What did organization abroad contribute to עלייה ALIYA?

The prime minister’s diary records discussion of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA networks in North Africa and proposed coordination of emigration activity. The archive translation lists cells of 200 members in Tunisia, 300 in Algeria, 200 in Morocco and 40 in Tangier; about 4,000 men had already been sent to the homeland, and 60 were listed as dissatisfied and wishing to return. These are organizational estimates and earlier movements, not new March 15 arrivals. Preparation by institutions of יהודים YEHUDIM helped connect communities abroad with the restored state; no new bureau or completed mass departure is established by the consultation alone.5

How is this dated?

This is the series’ civil-day recap for 1949-03-15, Day 472. The date register and TJD’s fixed-Hebrew conversion assign its daytime portion to י״ד באדר ה׳תש״ט 14th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709; after local sunset the date is ט״ו באדר ה׳תש״ט 15th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The recap route does not date every incident it describes. The UN hearing is explicitly March 15 at 11:45 a.m. JTA’s first sentencing report is March 15; its correction is March 18, and the court date remains unverified. 678

Guided reflections

  • How did the in-absentia correction change the account of persecution?
  • Why did דניאל אוסטר DANIEL AUSTER distinguish the whole holy city from individual sites?
